Datsun 510 Interior

NOTE: Keep looking back here as I will be updating the interior in the next week when I get a chance to take a whole LOT more photos of the interior

As with the rest of the build I had many ideas on how to go about the interior and ended up with quite a few excess parts once I finally got the interior setup how I wanted it.

Initially I bought a set of 300zx electric seats with *comfort* in mind and saw a novel value in having the electric front seats. The seats were and are very comfortable but they are also very thick and me being 6'4 made it extremely hard to fit in the car.

I made up a set of brackets for the 300zx seats so that they could be mounted on the floor. This worked perfectly and I could fit which was a bonus. The electrics worked on the seats and it was quite a novel thing to have but again i started to think shit these seats are REALLY heavy and I mean like 25kgs each!

After realising that the 300zx seats just weren't going to cut it I dug deep and bought myself some SAAS Mach II seats. Expensive but very light and nice and thin so I could mount them on original brackets without my head poking through the roof. Handy!

I had to make up a plate for the seats to mount on the original 510 rails. I bought a 4mm thick piece of alloy and simply cut out a square to bolt to the bottom of the seats. Bolted on the rails and they fit straight in.

As you can see the SAAS seats are a very TIGHT fit, but they do fit. Also another handy little bonus with these seats is that they are designed with harnesses in mind.

You'll also notice 4 point Racing Harnesses - these belts are brilliant to say the least. I mounted the harnesses into the stock Datsun floor mount points (from original seatbelts). On the rear I boloted the harnesses into the parcel shelf. To stop them from pulling out I made up a small 3mm aluminium plate (sandwich plate of sorts). I will add pics of the plates.

Relatively simple job - cut out 2 rectangles from your aluminium sheet (I used a metal blade on a jigsaw). And drill out the holes to line up with your holes in the parcel shelf.

Also to note is the lack of rear seat - I simply covered up the opening to the boot area with a 1.5mm aluminium sheet and pot rivoted it in simple and looks great. More pics to come of this.

The stock datsun 1600 dash just wasn't gonna cut it. No matter what mods were made to it, it just wasn't going to ever provide me with the info I wanted. That and the fact that I didn't want to have 5 billion gauges all over the place.

The dash is basically just an aluminium sheet cut out to hold my VDO gauges

  • VDO Boost Gauge
  • VDO Speedo
  • VDO Tachometer
  • VDO Fuel Gauge
  • VDO Water Temp Gauge
  • VDO Oil Pressure Gauge

Dash is a little rough at present - but it does the job and it's not like the rest of the car is ever going to be a show stopper.

Roll Cage

I found a roll cage in the ozdat classifieds that was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up (only $180). It's a 4 point cage that was apparently taken out of a rally car. There are 6 points where the cage bolts into the car but it is essentially a 4 point cage, just has 6 points to bolt into the car.

One next to each front seat and then the bars that return to the rear bolt back into the floor(not the rear parcel shelf as most do - which is relatively weak) and also bolt into where the back of the rear seat goes. With this cage there is no way you could put in a rear seat. That isn't a problem for me as I couldn't fit passengers in the back with the way I have my front seats setup.

It was quite surprising how much of a difference the cage made in stiffening up the car. I would like to make a couple of small changes to it but for now it will do as it was a bargain.
